They are all rated from one to five stars. Most three stars have air-conditioned rooms, cable/satellite TV and are good value. All serve breakfast, usually included in the price. An inn, or hostel, is often a converted historic building or mansion.
Inns
Pousadas de Portugal(www.pousadas.pt) is a chain of over forty hotels from historic properties such as monasteries or castles.
They are spread across the country, particularly in Alentejo and northern Portugal. Some have been dramatically modernised by the best Portuguese architects – the interiors of the pousadas in Alcácer do Sal, Tavira and Amares are impressive.
They are equivalent to 4 and 5-star hotels with rooms and suites; there is almost always a swimming pool, gardens and a good restaurant.
