Formosa Beach Location

Address: Rua da Praia Formosa

The Praia Formosa is a vast expanse of black sand (volcanic origin), stretching for approximately 2 kilometres.

The water is excellent. We are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Câmara de Lobos fishing village.

Exceptionally clean, it has been awarded the European Blue Flag. Praia Formosa is an occasionally windy pebble beach, not comfortable to spread out a towel.

There are 3 medical units, a playground, toilet facilities, and bars. It is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months.

Access is good, but parking is demand inadequate. This leads to many locals leaving their cars on the road and occasional police fine.

Despite it all, Praia Formosa is a traveller must-see. Experience the best of Madeira’s natural beauty!

Restaurant

Portuguese and Madeiran cuisines are served in the Praia Formosa restaurant, right next to the beach, run by chef Jorge.

We are served delicious fish and crispy chips. The food is always delicious here, with a good wine selection.

The price for two ranges from €25 to €50, and the personnel is quite skilled.

Things to do nearby:

This beach is linked to the Promenade of Lido and the Câmara de Lobos.

Câmara de Lobos has around 9,000 inhabitants. This old fishing village was an inspiration source for Sir Winston Churchill’s paintings.

Nearby are the Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex, the Forum Madeira and the Lido Bathing Complex facing the Gorgulho islet.

The Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex has two pools, one for children, access to the sea, a nursery, changing rooms, sun loungers, and parasols.

The Forum Madeira Funchal is an excellent place for shopping, cheerfully decorated during the end-of-year season. There are good cafes in the centre for a break from shopping and relaxing.

The Lido Bathing Complex
The Lido Bathing Complex in Funchal is an excellent place to take a dip, relax in the sun and enjoy the stunning views.

The pool is clean and well-maintained, with a diving board. The floating pontoon is the cherry on the cake.
