How to get to the Funchal Cable Car

Experience breathtaking views of Funchal from the comfort of the Funchal Cable Car! Take an exciting ride up to Monte – an adventure like no other!

If you’re staying outside Funchal, the best way to get there is by taxi or renting a car.

If you’re already in Funchal, it will be hard to miss the lower station – as locals will be able to point you in the right direction, and Funchal central is relatively small.

Opening Hours

From 09:00 to 17:45.

What is the best time to visit the Cable Car?

The optimal time would be in the morning to explore the various points and touristic activities at the mountain summit.
Avoid the midday if a cruise ship is anchored. In such cases, there will be queues.

What lies at the summit?

The cable car ride takes you to the small parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte, colloquially known as Monte.

Here, we have beautiful views of the Funchal amphitheatre. Near the station lies the unique Monte Palace Madeira Garden, the most visited spot on Madeira island.

Joe Berardo created Monte Palace, but it was already a beautiful farmhouse.

Due to the rich greenery and dry air, this spot has been a favourite since the island tourism sector began.

We are not far from the stunning Nossa Senhora do Monte Church (17th century), which houses the final resting place of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s monarch.

What is the price of the Funchal Cable Car – Monte?

Is it possible to make a reservation in advance?

How long does the journey take?

The journey typically takes 15 minutes. The trip from the Funchal centre to Monte is a 3,200-meter journey, ascending to 560 meters.

Experience

The journey on the cable car is exhilarating and unique! Travellers from all over the world flock to the Parque Almirante Reis to experience this one-of-a-kind adventure.

As we soar above the city, people and vehicles slowly transform into miniatures as we comfortably absorb the sun’s rays and the sparkling ocean views.

As we ascend, we snap countless photographs, impossible not to. Slowly the landscape shifts, becoming less urban, more rustic, and more in harmony with nature.

At the highest point, we take in the majestic view while sampling traditional local delicacies.

We do not know the Funchal beauty until experiencing the cable car.

How do I descend?

You can go back down using the cable car or by the Madeira toboggan ride.

Madeira Toboggan Ride

Descending the Monte via the Madeira toboggan ride is another exciting way to return to the city centre.

It is one of the most well-known activities to do in Madeira. In the 19th century, it was the means of descent to Funchal.

The price for a couple is €30. The journey ends on the Estrada do Livramento. For more information, see Madeira Toboggan Ride.
