We visited Taberna Ruel Restaurant, and it was great. Its location is ideal, on the historic Rua de Santa Maria, in the centre of Funchal’s old town. The atmosphere and the food were both noteworthy.

Taberna Ruel’s menu is full of delicious Madeiran cuisine dishes. Some standout dishes include the regional Espetada, the Octopus à Taberna Ruel and the lamb dish prepared by the chef.
Vegetarian options are also available to accommodate everyone.
One of the must-try dishes is the regional espetada, a traditional delicacy made with beef marinated and seasoned on a bay leaf skewer and grilled over hot coals.
Another traditional dish is the bolo do caco, made with wheat flour, sweet potatoes and garlic. It is served hot and stuffed with garlic butter, making it extra delicious.
Madeira wine suits the delicious apple pie with ice cream or the incredible passion fruit cheesecake.
It is a sweet wine, rich in flavour, produced for centuries, and aged in oak barrels. It is an island treasure.
Service
The team at Taberna Ruel are dynamic and professional and goes above and beyond. The wait time to be seated is reasonable, even during the busy summer.
Mr Ruel ensured that all of our needs were met. The food was so delicious. Ended up returning for dinner multiple times during our stay.
Price
The prices at Taberna Ruel are fair for what you get. On average, each person paid €35. (starter, meal, drink and dessert).
Conclusion
Taberna Ruel has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with soft lighting and a diverse menu that offers a range of delicious dishes, from traditional regional specialities to more exotic flavours.
It’s a great spot to sample typical Madeiran cuisine without leaving the heart of Funchal. During the summer, it’s recommended to make a reservation to secure a table.
