Funchal Jesuits College

On the façade, we find the leader of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
There is a rich decoration, with frescoes and marble, stained glass windows and a beautiful altar.

It is worth visiting for those who appreciate art and the Portuguese Baroque style. Climbing the tower offers a different perspective of the city.

The history contained here is immense.

On August 20, 1569, King Dom Sebastião issued a charter that led to the founding of the Jesuit College. It became a central part of the archipelago’s history.

The Jesuits aimed to create highly disciplined schools and propagate Catholic beliefs through missionary work.

The Jesuits quickly became the militant Papacy’s arm of the Catholic Church.

In 1599, the construction. The record of its completion remains on the door: 1619. Until the 19th century, it was the largest building on the island.

It is challenging to deepen studies on Companhia de Jesus in Funchal because all the paperwork disappeared after the Jesuit’s expulsion (18th century).

With the English occupation in 1801, it served as a barracks, first for the English, then for the Portuguese, until 1970. It is currently the rectory of Madeira’s University.
