Lido Bathing Complex

1 km from Belmond Reid’s Palace, to the west, is the Lido Bathing Complex with a huge saltwater pool – a great place to be in Funchal.

You can go down to the rocks and swim in the Atlantic. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex

At the far end is a small children’s pool with slides. There’s another bathing structure 2 km away: Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex.

Fórum Madeira

1 km away is Forum Madeira, on Estrada Monumental, the 2nd largest with all the clothing and electronics brands, cinemas and a supermarket (Pingo Doce).

Madeira Shopping

The biggest shopping centre is to the northwest – close to the highway, 10 minutes from Funchal’s coast: Madeira Shopping.

With a hypermarket (Continente), cinemas, 100 stores and 20 restaurants – with over 1000 parking spaces (free).

Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint

Close to Madeira Shopping, there is a beautiful viewpoint over Funchal: the Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint. Easy access, free parking and a restaurant.

Doca do Cavacas

On the west coast of Funchal, there is another bathing complex: Doca do Cavacas, with a saltwater pool. It has a great restaurant with a variety of fish dishes.

Formosa Beach

The promenade continues for 2 km to Formosa Beach: at the west end, there is a small strip of fine sand.

In 1566, 1000 French corsairs landed here and plundered the city. The island’s defence was unprepared for the number of French arquebusiers.
