  • Coordinates: 32.683261, -16.794911

We have a deep love for the sea. We chose places in Madeira to enjoy the crystal-clear waters, like the Balneario Complex of Ribeira da Boaventura in Santa Cruz.

When to visit

Besides winter, we can visit any time of the year as the rest of the year offers favourable conditions for sunbathing.

With a privileged geographical location, the island boasts warm weather conditions. The sea water is not too cold, influenced by the warm Gulf Stream current.

How to get there?

It is just a 5-minute drive from the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport. We can rent a car at the airport or use public transportation. If we opt for the bus from Funchal, we can take the 113 to the Santa Cruz Centro stop.

Opening Hours

The Ribeira da Boaventura Bathing Complex is open daily from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm.

Amenities and Features

It is an ideal space for families with children, offering two pools: a large one for adults and a small one for children. Both are supplied with filtered saltwater and are permanently monitored by qualified lifeguards.

In addition, the complex has a generous sunbathing area with synthetic grass where we can lay our towels or use sun loungers. However, what impressed us the most was the small protected bay.

We have direct access to the sea without fear of waves or currents. The water is as refreshing as lemonade on a hot summer day.

We can purchase cool drinks or light snacks such as sandwiches. We sit in the shade at tables with umbrellas and enjoy the panoramic view of the turquoise-blue sea.

Where to stay

There are several hotels and accommodations in the Santa Cruz area:

The Albatroz Madeira Hotel is a five-star hotel with a sea view and an infinity pool. It features spacious rooms with private balconies.

The Salt Water Villa is a wonderful house on Madeira Island. The house is decorated in bright, cheerful colours, and the outdoor pool has space for 8 people. It is very close to the complex.

Another more affordable option is Casa D’Avó Beatriz, a rustic house with three bedrooms and a garden. It is ideal for families or groups of friends who want more privacy and comfort.

Equipped with a kitchen, a living room with a fireplace, and an outdoor barbecue.

If you prefer apartments, you can stay at the Baía Brava Hotel Apartments: studios and apartments with a kitchenette and a balcony. Featuring an outdoor pool with a sea view.

Where to eat

To experience the local cuisine, we can go to Restaurant O Professor, which serves excellent grilled limpets. The restaurant has a cosy and family-friendly atmosphere.

Things to do nearby

We can explore the beaches and natural landscapes of Santa Cruz. For example, we can visit Palmeiras Beach, a pebble beach with a blue flag.

Another option is the Santa Cruz Aquapark, a water park with slides and pools for all ages. The park is thrilling for those who love adrenaline.

The Church of São Salvador is an architectural gem of the island. If we enjoy hiking, we can take the Levada do Caniçal pedestrian trail, which passes through various viewpoints.

The trail is easy, around 7 km (2:45 minutes). We can see the steep cliffs that contrast with the ocean’s blue. It’s like walking in an impressionist painting…

Garajau Beach is a refuge. Located at the base of a cliff, it is accessible by cable car or a winding road.

Ponta de São Lourenço is a peninsula that extends through the eastern end of the island of Madeira. The volcanic rock sculpted by wind and sea creates capricious forms.
