Santa Luzia Garden is 14,000 square meters of green spaces well-maintained by the Municipality of Funchal.

They got a playground for the kids and even a café with a terrace. This space was completed in 2004, occupying the former Hinton engineering factory (Fábrica do Torreão), which produced sugar cane brandy.

They even kept the massive chimney that belonged to the old factory and a set of toothed wheels.

It’s divided into several areas that correlate with five different themes: the Laurissilva, Terraced, Levadas, Tropical and Amphitheater gardens.

The Laurisilva is a type of humid subtropical forest originating in the Macaronesia region, and it covers a large part of Madeira island.

The Levadas are water channels built to carry water from the mountain. These trails cover most of the island, from subtropical forests to rocky areas. It’s worth checking out.
