São Pedro Church

São Pedro church in Funchal boasts an impressive mannerist portal. It was only completed in the 18th century, despite the order for construction being given in 1590.

A temple built over two centuries is like an old oak tree whose roots have grown deep and sturdy through the years.

Rua de São Pedro 1, 9000-219 Funchal

The São Pedro Church interior was completed in 1743. As such, it is an architectural and ornamental blend ranging from the 17th century to the 19th century.

The result is a patchwork quilt – each element contributes to the overall effect, and the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

The church’s walls are lined with 17th-century tiles, which reach almost to the top of the bell tower – the bright and colourful tiles demand our attention.

The carved altars are also from the late 17th century: the paintings, jewels and furniture from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

It is a hidden tourist spot in the capital island’s alleys, deserving of our visit.
