Address: Sítio da Vila – Igreja

The church is open to the public daily from 9am to 6pm, with free admission.

Approaching the church, its baroque façade with a portal and a square tower left us with low expectations. However, as we stepped inside, we were enchanted by the beauty and richness of detail.

The walls are covered with blue and white tiles. The ceiling displays biblical scenes and patron saints. The painting of Saint Vincent blessing the village with his miraculous hands is of unmatched beauty and deeply moved us.

The altar is a treasure trove of baroque carving, with a retablo that shines like gold and a centrepiece dedicated to Saint Elizabeth, the church patron saint and of the poor.

It is impossible not to feel transported to another era, as if we were immersed in the history and beauty of those times.

For music lovers, the 18th-century pipe organ is a majestic and impressive instrument, restored in 2010 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Its captivating sound is perfect for religious events and celebrations. It completes the enchanting church atmosphere.

Things To Do Nearby

Don’t miss out on visiting other attractions near the church. The caves and the Volcanism Centre are must-visit for those who want to explore more of the São Vicente region. And the Calhau Chapel is a magical place where one can experience the beauty of nature and local devotion.

Finally, we recommend the Capelinha of Nossa Senhora de Fátima at the top of Pico da Cova. Founded in 1931 by Father Agostinho de Abreu Vieira, the chapel has a tower with a mechanical clock that echoes throughout the parish. The panoramic view over the São Vicente valley and the sea is breathtaking.
