The Design Center Nini Andrade Silva is conveniently located near the port of Funchal and just a stone’s throw away from the CR7 museum.
Just a short walk down from the fortress, the Lobo Marinho ferry departs for Porto Santo Island. The journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. A round trip ticket is 60€.

Centuries ago, the Design Center Nini Andrade Silva was the residence of the Portuguese knight José Gonçalves Zarco. He discovered the Madeira archipelago and played a pivotal role in founding Funchal city.
In Zarco’s time, it was an islet that didn’t resist Funchal port expansion. Today, it has been reborn as a hub for creativity and design, featuring a shop, a restaurant, and a café with a charming terrace.

The atmosphere in the room was enchanting, from the warm and welcoming lighting to the elegant decor. It was an afternoon filled with joy and laughter, and the gentle breeze only added to the easygoing vibe.
Menu – Food
The menu at the restaurant is truly one-of-a-kind, creatively reinterpreting traditional Madeiran cuisine. Each dish is prepared with great care and attention to detail, with ingredients expertly combined to bring out the best possible flavours.
The wine list is impressive, but expect to pay premium prices. The selection is extensive, with a range of red, white, and sparkling wines, ensuring something to please every palate.
One must-try dish is the Black Angus Fillet (€28). The meat is tender and cooked to perfection, and the sauce is divine. It pairs perfectly with the side dishes.
Each bite was an explosion of flavours and textures.
We ordered the chocolate vase (€9) for dessert. It was absolutely delicious! Highly recommended for any chocolate lover.

About Design Centre
The permanent exhibit is the foundation of this space. It tells the tale of Madeira’s history and culture in a new way.
The Garouta do Calhau has become a well-respected brand and an institution that supports the less fortunate.
Back in the day, “Garouta do Calhau” was the name for the less fortunate children who’d dive next to anchored ships to collect coins thrown by tourists.
Nini Andrade Silva took on that name and turned it into a symbol of art and culture.
This space is the realization of a dream by Madeiran designer Nini Andrade Silva.
Inside, it’s all black and white. Nini always says it ain’t what you see but what you feel. Here, we feel peaceful and tranquil.
