Madalena do Mar is a picturesque village on the island’s southwestern coast, with stunning sea views and cliffs.

The village was once home to a legendary 15th-century knight, Henrique Alemão, who was speculated to be a European king who lost a battle in 1444.

He was granted land by Prince Henry the Navigator. He established a farm and built a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.
