Last-Minute Tips

Remember to bring water and snacks.

Proper footwear and comfortable clothing are essential for the hike, as the trail can be slippery in certain areas, particularly during spring and autumn.

Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and a camera to capture the moment.

Duration & Distance

This is a 10.5 kilometre-long trail with a moderate difficulty level, beginning and ending at the same point (circular). You can complete it in 3 or 4 hours, depending on your pace.

Along the way, we encounter historical remnants of the ancient Achadas and Levada Grande mills, which take us on a journey through time.

Initially, the levadas were the result of incredible efforts to supply water to the mills scattered throughout the island.
With the sugarcane’s arrival, the levadas gained their unique importance.

This crop requires a lot of water, making these structures essential. Walking along the levadas is also a testament to the Madeiran people’s sacrifice and ingenuity.

The Experience

The journey begins at a specific location, near the Church of Lombada, where a narrow passage leads adventurers directly to the levada.

The first few kilometres of Levada do Moinho follow the mountain slope, offering incredible views of the valley between the mountains and the ocean on the horizon.

The gentle breeze caresses your skin, and the sweet aroma of wildflowers intertwines in the atmosphere.

In the distance, the agricultural fields appear as carefully cultivated works of art. It’s hard not to be mesmerized by the expansive panorama of the valley and the village of Ponta do Sol. But there’s still a long way to go…
Slowly, the lush Laurissilva Forest envelops us in a green embrace.

During the hike, pay attention to certain parts of the trail that can be a bit more challenging, such as the parts of the levada without lateral protection. But there’s nothing to worry about, as there’s nothing dangerous.

The singular beauty of Levada do Moinho reaches its climax with the majestic waterfall. The trail takes us through an underground passage carved into the mountain wall, where water gushes in free fall.

This is also a well-deserved moment for a small snack at the site.

Next, the trail continues through a dark tunnel, where a flashlight is necessary to proceed safely.

After the tunnel, the path follows Levada Nova, which runs along the cliff with views of the ocean below.

We return along the same path, arriving at the Lombada Church, feeling triumphal and grateful. The experience is so great that the fatigue in our feet is quickly forgotten.

The walk to the waterfall and through the tunnel are the highlights, but the entire trail is enchanting, with stunning views.
