The Experience

After hearing many compliments about Levada das 25 Fontes, we decided to venture on the trail and experience it ourselves.

We were impressed by the natural beauty that surrounded us during the walk, with its dense vegetation and crystal-clear waterfalls that appeared along the way.

The walk begins with a spectacular view from the picturesque parking lot, which already offers a taste of what’s to come.

Following the 2 km path to the Casa de Abrigo de Rabaçal, we are greeted by various waterfall viewpoints that amazed us.

Upon reaching Casa de Abrigo, we find the sign for Levada do Risco and turn to the Levada das 25 Fontes sign. It is one of the safest and most popular trails in Madeira.

Along the way, the forest envelops us and creates impressive tunnels, forming stunning scenery.

To the left, the Ribeira da Janela Valley accompanies us to the origin of Levada das 25 Fontes, with its deep and charming landscape.

The last 1,300 meters of the trail require more attention, but the trail’s beauty makes each step a unique experience. The bright and contrasting colours of the flowers and plants are a true spectacle in their own right.

The trail becomes narrower, the left side surrounded by steep slopes and bushes forming a flowery and verdant backdrop.

Finally, we reach the crescent-shaped lagoon bordering a cliff with numerous waterfalls – known as the 25 Fontes.

The constant and gentle sound of the waterfalls throughout the path brings more life and beauty to the trail.

Here, we enjoyed the incredible view, had a snack under a large stone surrounded by the shade of nature, and witnessed the bravery of those who quickly plunged into the icy water.

After the snack, we felt energized for the return to Casa de Abrigo de Rabaçal.

The walk can be completed in about 3-4 hours, depending on how much one relaxes and enjoys the beautiful scenery of the valley and various stunning waterfalls along the way. We can hardly wait to return to Levada das 25 Fontes.
