PR 6.1 Levada do Risco

The Rabaçal valley is one of the most beautiful places on the island, renowned for its incredible hiking trails, notably the Risco Levada.
Discover more about the island in Things To Do Madeira. Information on Funchal can be found in Things To Do In Funchal.

Levadas are small ancient aqueducts that make up a vast irrigation system built by our ancestors with great determination and physical effort.

We are just a 20-minute drive from Calheta Beach, a space filled with endemic trees and plants.

Almost devoid of signs of civilization, except for the small shelter house.

Where does Levada do Risco begin?

The two (Levada do Risco and Levada das 25 Fontes) start at Regional Road 105 adjacent to a parking lot.

Next, we walk for 2 km until we reach the Rabaçal Shelter.

The Experience

We set off from the Casa de Abrigo do Rabaçal, where visitors can enjoy a comforting coffee and use the restroom facilities.

Descending the stairs, we reached the Levada do Risco, following the instructions indicated by the signs (PR6.1 Levada Risco) and avoiding the trail to the left, which descends towards Levada das 25 Fontes.

This detour to Cascata do Risco has only 800 meters round trip and is worth it. We climbed to the top, surrounded by imposing trees and advanced through the typical vegetation of heathland and heather.

The gentle rhythm of the water accompanied us all day, providing tranquillity, making the uphill climbs more bearable, and bringing a sense of peace.

This is the habitat of the trocaz pigeon (Columba trocaz). It must be the most exclusive pigeon in the world, as it only lives on the tropical island of Madeira.

The Levada do Risco led us on an adventure, exploring altitudes that reach 1000 meters and allowing us to enjoy breathtaking views of Madeira island.

As we walked towards the end of the trail, the frequency of the Laurissilva forest intensified, filling our eyes with the magnificence of its lush vegetation.

A feeling of calm and tranquillity took hold of us. It was rewarding to feel our senses heightened, absorbing all the smells, colours, and sounds surrounding us.

Butterflies, bees, and insects could be seen almost everywhere on the trail. Wildflowers bloom, especially in spring, and many vibrant colours sprinkle the vegetation.

The ultimate reward comes after 50 minutes. We come face to face with the magnificent Cascata do Risco, cascading down from a high cliff.

After heavy rains, it thunders through the valley. However, during the summer, it is less powerful.

To return, we retraced our steps along the same path. You always have the option to extend your adventure and take a detour to Levada das 25 Fontes. The signage is easy to follow.
