We stumbled upon the Rei da Poncha, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Funchal’s Old Town.

The outdoor seating area beckoned us in, and we were immediately charmed by the lively atmosphere and attentive table service. As we sipped our refreshing beverages, the hustle and bustle of the city melted away, leaving us to soak in the ambience of this charming bar.

The Rei da Poncha quickly became our go-to spot for a nightcap during our stay in Funchal.

As we entered the Rei da Poncha, we were immediately struck by the inviting atmosphere. The outdoor seating area was bustling with patrons, chatting and laughing over drinks and regional delicacies.

The mood was lively and young, amplified by the perfect level of background music, creating a sense of warmth and camaraderie.

The energy at the Rei da Poncha was contagious, leaving us uplifted and in great spirits.


The speciality is the Poncha drink, expertly mixed and with an unmistakable flavour.

There is a wide range of Ponchas prepared with brandy. For the more adventurous, the Metro Mix Poncha (€10) rewards us with a selection of mini ponchas with different flavours.

It’s a fun way to taste various drinks together.

The passion fruit Poncha was a delight (€2.5). The tangerine ones were also pleasant, though slightly more acidic.

The Poncha was only a prelude, as the Nikitas are equally delicious: soft sweetness with a refreshing pineapple flavour.

We were pleasantly surprised by the affordability of the Rei da Poncha. For an average price of €18 per person, we indulge in a satisfying meal accompanied by a refreshing drink.

And for those on a budget, the establishment offers fantastic value with options priced at under €10.
