Origin – Santa Maria Maior

The Funchal was dotted with tiny settlements along the coast. This one (formerly Santa Maria do Calhau) developed spontaneously from the first dwellings (1425).

It extended to the Corpo Santo around a small temple (1430). Over the centuries, these small settlements gradually merged to form the city we know today.

The parish of Santa Maria Maior is the oldest on the island.

Its name is because its old chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Calhau is larger than the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception built by João Gonçalves Zarco (the site of the current Santa Clara Church).

The chapel was several times a victim of the landslides that plagued the coast of Funchal. The current church we see was completed in the 18th century.

The church boasts an elegant portal made of black volcanic stone, with white plaster and wooden doors that welcome visitors. It is the only church in Madeira with a Baroque facade.

Inside, one marvel at its sturdy structure. It also houses the marriage records of Funchal.

São Tiago Menor (James the Less) Festivity

The church draws visitors from far and wide to admire its architecture and celebrate the Feast of St. James the Less, the city patron saint, following a plague outbreak (1521).

The pestilence resulted in a high mortality rate in the city, around 30 deaths per day.

The election of the city’s protector was held, and 15 saints were drawn, with St. James the Less being elected, thus commencing his cult.

The feast of St. James the Less is typically held on May 1st. The image of St. James is taken in procession to this church, where a solemn Mass is celebrated.

St. James the Less was one of Jesus’ cousins. He is often mistaken for St. James the Great, another apostle of Christ.

St. James the Less was renowned for his unwavering dedication and devotion. He was the first bishop of Jerusalem and emerged as a leader of the early Christian movement.

The Church of Santa Maria Maior is a remarkable aspect of Funchal’s history, cherished by all who visit it.
