With a circular tower in a revivalist arrangement and inscriptions and coats of arms of Baroque origin, this imposing fort is an excellent example of the skill of the builders of the time.
Features a perfectly arched portal on its north façade, national coats of arms, and an image of São Bento on the seaside. It is a valuable historical heritage site on the island’s west coast.

After suffering severe damage in 1803, it was renovated in 1916 and leased as a prison by the Municipal Council in 1920.
