São Bento Fort, Ribeira Brava

The São Bento Fort in Ribeira Brava is a historical landmark dating back to the 18th century, built to protect the Madeira Island coast against attacks from corsairs and pirates. With a circular tower in a revivalist arrangement and inscriptions and coats of arms of Baroque origin, this imposing fort is an excellent example of the skill of the builders of the time.

Features a perfectly arched portal on its north façade, national coats of arms, and an image of São Bento on the seaside. It is a valuable historical heritage site on the island’s west coast.

After suffering severe damage in 1803, it was renovated in 1916 and leased as a prison by the Municipal Council in 1920.

Today, it houses a Tourist Information Centre and attracts visitors from all over the world who want to learn about the history and architecture of this monument.
