The Ritz Madeira

Have you ever heard of The Ritz Madeira? From the start, it was a charming cafe for Madeiran high society gathering for afternoon tea.

It is a great place to relax, watching the busy people crossing the square that faces it.

Most on the terrace enjoy the delicious ice cream. We joined the chorus.

We are only 50 meters from Blandy’s Wine Lodge. We learned about the history of Madeira wine and purchased it in the cellar shop.

Ambience

The building stood tall, its famous blue and white antique tiles depicting the rich history of Madeira Island. From the early navigators to the dancers and merchants, the tiles tell a story of its people.

As we go inside, we are transported to the roaring 20s: elegant and beautifully decorated. The atmosphere was nostalgic.

We made our way up to the floor of the restaurant. A popular spot is known for its live music performances and festive evening gatherings.

Food

The menu offered pizzas, delicious pasta, irresistible burgers and fresh fish.

We heard the sea bass was particularly noteworthy and decided to try it. t was perfectly cooked – the skin crispy and the meat juicy.

For something lighter, try the Mediterranean chicken salad.

We couldn’t resist trying their signature ice cream. They have the best ice cream on the island.

A truly remarkable selection of flavours: from fruity favourites to exotic options.

And it’s not just any ice cream: freshest Italian ice cream in Madeira, with more than 30 flavours. It was the perfect way to cool off during our long walks.

Service

The attention to detail was superb, and overall excellent experience. The team was extremely diligent, inquiring about food allergies we might have. We believe anyone to dine here will have an enchanting experience like ours. The Ritz truly exceeded our expectations.

Price

Prices at The Ritz are reasonable for its location.

We paid an average of €27 per person, including a starter, drink, and dessert. It is a bit above average, but to be expected given the location and its history.

History

As Christian Ritz, a young New York businessman, set foot on the island of Madeira in 1905, he couldn’t help but be captivated by a young local woman named Clara. Though she was already in a relationship with an English engineer, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she was meant to be his.

With a heavy heart, he left the island on an ocean liner, promising himself and Clara that he would return. Five months later, he made good on his promise and sailed back to Madeira, eager to see her again. But when he arrived, he discovered that Clara had not received his letters and was now engaged to the engineer.

Determined not to lose her, he suggested spending a year getting to know her before a final decision. And so, Christian put all his effort into opening a small café in Funchal, naming it The Ritz, in the hopes of winning Clara’s heart. And through his dedication, he eventually succeeded.

Conclusion

The Ritz Madeira, a historic and romantic destination, exudes an incredible atmosphere that invites visitors to unwind and relax. This once café has been transformed into one of the most sought-after spots in Funchal, offering a unique blend of history and culture.
