We encountered the Arts Centre – House of Mudas, a thirty-minute car journey from Funchal. The terrace invites a brief respite.

It is nestled on an isolated hill with a spellbinding panoramic view of the ocean and the centre of the town of Calheta.

This project by the Madeiran architect Paulo David is distinguished by its harmony with the surrounding landscape. It was nominated in 2005 for the European Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe.

We discovered artworks within, dating back to the 1960s, including notable artists such as Joaquim Rodrigo’s geometric painting and António Areal’s Pop and Nouveau Réalisme art.

António Areal is the grandfather of the celebrated artist Martim Brion, who also has a solo exhibition at the MUDAS.

Opening Hours

  • From Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
  • It is closed on Sundays and Fridays.

Access to the Museum is via a ramp leading to the central quadrangular platform of the centre.

This charming two-storey space boasts a unique design. We discovered exhibition rooms, a gallery, a library, a shop, a café, and a restaurant within.

It features an auditorium with a capacity of 250 people, which can be utilised for performances, meetings, and film screenings.

The restaurant is in the middle of the complex, with a capacity of 50 people and a breathtaking view of the ocean and Calheta.

The artificial sand beach is located near the village center, next to the marina. It is known for its serene waters and fascinating landscapes.

Sociedade de Engenheiros da Calheta

We discovered an authentic operating museum in the village, still using 1800 machines to produce high-quality rum through controlled fermentation and meticulous distillation.

This place offers guided tours every Thursday to Saturday. It shows the various stages of the production process, and we purchased Poncha.

Levada 25 Fontes

Rabaçal is a breathtaking natural area known for its waterfalls and trails. The Risco Levada, the 25 Fontes Levadas and the Levada of Alecrim are three trails that offer stunning views of Madeira.

Cabo Girão Skywalk

Cabo Girão is a natural wonder on the southern coast of Madeira, Portugal. It is home to the world’s highest cliff, with an incredible vertical drop of more than 500 meters down to the Atlantic Ocean below.

Visitors can experience the joy of the Skywalk and admire ocean views.

Ponta do Sol Beach

It is a beautiful isolated stretch of water on the southern coast of the island of Madeira, near Câmara dos Losbos. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.
