Nossa Senhora da Luz Church, Ponta do Sol

As we arrive at the village of Ponta do Sol, Madeira, we are greeted by the majestic Church of Our Lady of Light, the main temple of the region built in the late 15th century. Its body was expanded in 1708, when its facade was rebuilt, giving a more grandiose look to the building.

Ponta do Sol is blessed with fertile lands attracting settlers since 1440. The village developed rapidly, becoming one of the most active and abundant sugar production centres.

As we enter the church, we are struck by its beauty. The church is in the Manueline style, with a single longitudinal nave and a rectangular chancel.
Inside, there’s a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio, built by the 1486 will of Rodrigues Eanes, one of the first settlers.

The church walls are covered with tiles, and the gilded altarpiece enchants us. The organ has been impeccably restored.

The Hispano-Moorish style ceiling is a work of art. King Dom Manuel I offered the green ceramic baptismal font in the Mudéjar style.

Things to do nearby:

Ponta do Sol Beach is not large, mainly formed by rounded pebbles. The water is usually calm, with a temperature of around 21°C during the summer. It has a good bathing infrastructure, with some restaurants and bars nearby.

The Levada do Moinho is a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts. At the end of the trail, there is a spring that forms a small waterfall. We can park our car in one of the available spots along the road, just above Ponta do Sol.

Madalena do Mar Beach is a pebble beach, and the sea current can be powerful. Recommended to go with friends or family, as there are no lifeguards on duty. For fishing enthusiasts, there is an appropriate pier nearby.

Ribeira Brava Beach is inviting, with mild temperatures and a gentle breeze blowing during the summer. It is perfect for a refreshing swim.

The Fajã dos Frades Cable Car takes us to a small beach full of pebbles, whose charm is magical and provides an unforgettable sunset.
