Calheta is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Madeira, being amongst the first to be explored by the early settlers.

In the mid-15th century, the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Estrela was built by Beatriz Gonçalves da Câmara (the daughter of João Gonçalves Zarco).

With the advancement of colonization, a new religious worship centre established in Calheta, with the Divine Holy Spirit as its patron saint.

Until the 16th century, the festival was celebrated in most Portuguese towns, with Tomar being the epicentre – the headquarters of the Order of Christ.

After 1540 (Inquisition), it was banned (except for the Azores). It was restored in the second half of the 20th century, but never with the same fervour.

Calheta became one of the centres for the production and processing of sugar cane, along with the city of Funchal, due to the creation of various agricultural production units.

This social and agricultural development propelled the economic growth of Calheta, which became a main commerce centre for this valuable product.
